How the Morel Forecast Score Works

The readiness score is built on real weather data, not guesswork. Here's exactly what goes into it — and what it can't tell you.

High score = good conditions. Not a GPS coordinate. A 90 means the weather strongly favors morel emergence in your region. It does not mean morels are present at any specific tree, hillside, or forest. Habitat knowledge — developed over time by hunting — is what closes the gap between "conditions are right" and "I found them."

The Four Factors

Each factor is derived from real-time weather station observations and updated when you enter your location or enable GPS.

🌱 Soil Temperature — Primary Driver

The single most important factor. Yellow morels emerge most reliably when soil temperatures at 4-inch depth reach 50–57°F. Black morels appear slightly earlier, around 45–52°F. The forecast estimates soil temp from recent air temperature history using standard soil heat flux principles.

Optimal window: 50–57°F soil temp

Too early: Below 45°F

Too late: Consistently above 60°F

🌙 Overnight Lows

Morels require nights above freezing to fruit. Hard frost will knock back an active flush and can damage emerging fruiting bodies. The score tracks overnight low temperatures for the past several nights and penalizes conditions where overnight frost is occurring or recently occurred.

Good: Lows consistently above 38°F

Poor: Hard frost (below 32°F)

🌧️ Recent Rainfall

Morels need moisture to push. A soaking rain (0.5–1.5 inches over 2–4 days) followed by warm weather is the classic trigger. The score rewards recent meaningful precipitation and penalizes extended dry spells, even when temperatures are ideal.

Good: 0.5–1.5 inches in the past 3–5 days

Poor: Extended drought, or excessive flooding

📈 Warming Trend

A multi-day warming pattern — temperatures rising consistently over several days — is a strong emergence signal. The score rewards a sustained warm-up following a cooler period, which reflects the thermal accumulation pattern that triggers morel fruiting.

Good: 3–5 days of consistently warming temps

Neutral: Flat temperatures at correct range

What the Score Does Not Account For

Knowing the limitations of any forecast tool is as important as knowing what it does.

The score measures regional weather conditions — not habitat quality at your specific location. Even in a perfect-score week, a location with no suitable tree associations, poor soil drainage, or heavy human pressure may produce nothing. Habitat knowledge built through experience is irreplaceable.

📍 Not a Location Tool

The score does not know what trees grow near you, what soil type you have, what aspect your slope faces, or whether anyone else is hunting the same ground. It reflects weather, not habitat.

🏔️ Elevation Variation

Soil temperatures vary significantly with elevation, slope aspect, and canopy cover. A south-facing slope at 800 feet can be 10°F warmer than a north-facing hollow at 1,200 feet. The score uses your location's average conditions.

📅 Year-to-Year Variation

Morel emergence timing can shift 3–4 weeks from one year to the next based on winter snowpack, spring freeze patterns, and overall thermal accumulation. The score reflects current conditions — not historical averages.

🍄 Microhabitat

The same day that produces a 90 score can mean nothing in a mature closed-canopy stand with the wrong species, and an extraordinary flush in a dying elm thicket two miles away. The score is one tool, not the whole picture.

Real-time air temperature, overnight low temperatures, and precipitation data are sourced from NOAA weather station observations and the National Weather Service. Data is pulled for the nearest available observation station to your entered location or GPS coordinates.

Soil Temperature Estimation

Soil temperature at 4-inch depth is estimated from recent air temperature observations using established heat flux principles. Actual soil temperatures vary with soil type, moisture, organic matter, and cover. The estimate is a useful approximation — not a precision measurement. Use a soil thermometer for field verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my score different from my neighbor's score a few miles away?

The score is calculated using the nearest weather station to each entered location. If you and your neighbor are pulling from different stations, your scores may reflect slightly different local conditions — which is accurate. Microclimatic differences between locations (elevation, proximity to water, terrain) can genuinely produce different emergence conditions even within a few miles.

How often is the score updated?

The score is calculated fresh each time you open the app and enter or confirm your location. There is no fixed update schedule — it reflects conditions at the time you check. During rapidly changing spring weather, checking morning and evening can show meaningfully different scores.

Does the score account for elevation?

The score uses your location's weather station data, which includes elevation context. However, it does not account for the specific aspect (north vs. south facing) or canopy cover of a particular hunting spot. South-facing slopes typically run 1–2 weeks ahead of north-facing slopes at the same location — something the score cannot capture at the site level.

Why does the score drop suddenly overnight?

The most common cause is an overnight frost event dropping the overnight-low component, or a sudden cooling front reducing the warming-trend signal. The score is sensitive to changes in conditions — a hard frost mid-season can genuinely delay or interrupt a flush, so a score drop in that scenario is accurate.

Why doesn't the score match what I'm seeing on the ground?

Several reasons. The score reflects regional weather conditions — your specific habitat may be ahead or behind. Elevation, aspect, soil drainage, and the density of appropriate host trees all affect local emergence independent of weather. A score of 80 means conditions favor morels; it doesn't mean they're present everywhere. Use the score alongside habitat knowledge and community reports for the best picture.
