Eastern Nebraska Morel Season
· Part of the Nebraska morel season guide
Most of Nebraska's morel hunting happens in the eastern third of the state, where the big river bottoms hold the timber. Game and Parks puts it simply: the first morels show up along eastern river bottoms, and a few weeks later they come up in the hilly woods above the rivers. [S1]
Counties this page covers
This page uses "Eastern Nebraska" for the Missouri River counties from Washington and Douglas south through Sarpy, Cass, Otoe, Nemaha and Richardson, plus the lower Platte valley counties of Dodge, Colfax and Saunders, and the southeast hills of Johnson and Pawnee. [S2]
Typical timing vs. the rest of Nebraska
| Area | Typical window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Missouri and lower Platte river bottoms | mid-April to early May | First finds of the state [S1][S2] |
| Wooded hills and bluffs above the rivers | late April to mid-May | A few weeks behind the bottoms [S1] |
| Central Nebraska (Loup, Niobrara) | late April to early May | Behind the east [S2] |
These are typical ranges from past seasons, not a promise for next spring. Our state guide puts eastern first finds around mid-April, with any one spot sometimes lasting only about 10 days. [S2]
Soil and weather cues
- Watch for soil near 50°F and rising for several days. See the soil temperature guide. [S3]
- Warm rain on warming ground is the usual trigger. See how long after rain. [S4]
- Spring weather can swing from warm to cold. If a cold snap hits, keep an eye on the forecast and soil temps rather than writing off the season.
Trees and terrain
- Cottonwood: Game and Parks says to look near dead and decaying trees like cottonwoods. [S1]
- Elm and ash: dying elm and dead ash in the bottoms are worth checking. See dead elms & ash. [S2][S5]
- Terrain: start in the river bottoms early, then work the wooded slopes above them as the season moves on. [S1]
- River sandbars: nearly all river sandbars and riverside woods are private, so you need permission even if you arrive by kayak or airboat. [S1]
Public land and rules
- State parks, state recreation areas and wildlife management areas: open to non-commercial mushroom hunting. Parks need a vehicle park permit. [S1][S6]
- Open Fields and Waters sites: not open to mushroom picking. [S1][S6]
- Private land: get the landowner's permission, posted or not. [S1]
- Parking: it's illegal to park at bridges along public roads. [S1]
- Turkey season overlaps morel season. Wear blaze orange and steer clear of hunters and blinds. [S1]
- Limit: No published statewide limit. [S6]
- Selling and national forest: Check with the property office before you pick or sell. [S6]
- Rules change, check before you go.
The official Game and Parks Public Access Atlas maps public land, but it also shows Open Fields and Waters sites, which are closed to mushroom picking. Check each site's rules before you go. [S7] We don't list specific spots.
Beginner pointers
- Walk slowly and scan the ground. Where you find one, look for more. [S1]
- Carry a mesh bag. [S1]
- Learn to tell true from false morels and get ID help from experts. See true vs. false morels. This page makes no edibility claims.
